DOE exec gives househusbands energy-saving tips

Christina Mendez - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Energy has advised the public to take energy-conservation measures to cushion the impact of the power hike of about P1.40 per kilowatt-hour (kwh) as a result of the scheduled shutdown of the Malampaya plant from Jan. 28 to Feb. 18.

In a briefing at Malacañang yesterday, Energy Undersecretary Wimpy Fuentebella urged househusbands, whom he called “Andres de Saya,” not to iron clothes during peak hours to lessen energy consumption.

Andres de Saya is a Filipino movie character who always follows his wife’s orders.

“Yung grupo ng mga Andres de Saya eh mamalantsa po tayo ng weekend, ng umaga (to the group of Andres de Saya, iron clothes during weekends or in the morning),” Fuentebella said.

“The Andres de Saya should not iron clothes from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m., 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. during weekdays. Lessen also the use of air conditioner because the month of February is cool,” he added.

Based on government simulations, consumers might see a P1.20 to P1.40 increase per kwh in their electric bill for March. This will translate to a P200 to P300 spike in households that consume 200 kwh per month.

The Malampaya facility will be shut down for deep sea and platform repairs. The shutdown will force plants that depend on Malampaya to use more expensive diesel power, according to Fuentebella.
