Two queens circa 1926
In 1926, the search for the first Miss Philippines was launched, to be chosen from representatives from provinces all over the country.
The popular winner was a winsome lass from Lemery, Batangas, Anita Noble, who came from a prominent family, related to patriots and intellectuals. Her court was composed of regional winners carrying the titles Miss Luzon, Miss Visayas, Miss Mindanao.
Also in 1926, a Carnival Queen was chosen, Socorro Henson, coming from a distinguished family in Pampanga.
While Anita had her proclamation night, Socorro had her coronation night.
The following year, 1927, the two titles were merged, Miss Philippines-Carnival Queen to preserve the regal tone and title of the winning beauty. Crowned was Luisa Marasigan of Gumaca, Tayabas (now Quezon), billed Queen Luisa 1.
Anita married Juan Nakpil, son of Julio Nakpil, patriot-musician and Gregoria de Jesus, widow of Andres Bonifacio. Their son Juan received the National Artist Award for Architecture, while daughter Edith was 1955 Miss Philippines Boys Town. Another daughter, Annie, was Miss Batangas of 1951.— RKC
