MANILA, Philippines – A 60-year-old woman died while two others were injured in a fire that destroyed at least 20 homes in Quezon City before dawn yesterday.

Emelita Duyan, 60, was trapped in her burning house along General Avenue in Barangay Tandang Sora, fire officials said.

Helen Goloran and Patrick Yangua suffered burns and head wounds from the fire.

Superintendent Jesus Fernandez, city fire marshall, said the blaze left around 60 families homeless.

The fire reportedly started at the kitchen of Duyan’s two-story home just before 4 a.m. and quickly spread, destroying about P200,000 worth of property and reaching third alarm before it was put out around 5:10 a.m.

Fernandez said a faulty gas stove may have caused the fire but the case is still under investigation.
