Heart's eulogy for Miriam: I shall forever treasure our shared memories together
MANILA, Philippines – Actress Heart Evangelista on Saturday evening went emotional as she delivered her eulogy for the late Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago.
In her heartfelt eulogy speech, Heart addressed lawyer Narciso “Jun” Santiago and their family as she expressed gratitude over the moments shared with Miriam, who passed away last Thursday after battling lung cancer.
“Thank you so much for sharing her with me. I shall forever treasure our shared memories together,” Heart told Santiago family.
Teary-eyed Heart recalled her memories with the late senator, whom she considers as one of her closest friends and whom she has referred to as her second mother. She fondly calls her “Tita Miriam.”
"For indeed those were the times everything and anything was possible with you by my side, with you holding my hand. You were my fairy godmother, my protector, my hero, my mother, and my best friend," she said in her speech.
"You made me feel like the world was just waiting for me to spread my wings and make my dreams come true. You made me feel how special I was and that I was indeed a child of the universe, as you would always say. You were ever so generous of your time and your heart to me, everybody wanted to be with you and yet you gave me so much of your borrowed time," the actress said of Santiago.
Miriam introduced Heart to her now husband Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero. As she continued to remember her close friend, Heart narrated how she now understands how it is to let go now that she is in pain of Miriam’s passing.
"You held my hand so tight and when it was my time to face the world, you allowed me to spread my wings. And though it was probably hard for you to let go, now I understand because now that it's my turn to let go, it's so hard. I do not want to but I know I have to. I take comfort in knowing I will see you again," Heart said.
"You were that bright light. You were my north star. Your memory will always light my path.You have touched me so deeply and yet you changed me permanently. You guided me perfectly into this world when I needed guidance the most and for that, I thank you. I will forever be grateful for the love you made me feel," she continued.
Heart delivered her eulogy speech after flying back from Hanoi, Vietnam with her husband. Escudero was among the delegates of President Rodrigo Duterte in his two-day official trip to Vietnam.
"You must be happy as you crossover to where your son and loved ones are waiting for you," Heart said.
"Thank you so much, My dearest Tita Miriam and For now I shall say goodbye and with a sad smile, I will say, until we meet again," she concluded.
The actress also paid tribute to Miriam in a series of posts on Instagram.
