Their hands tell the story

FUNFARE - Ricky Lo - The Philippine Star

Even when the employees were swarming them for selfies, scrambling over one another as they followed them from the entrance to the Entertainment Section office on the second floor, KathNiel loveteam Kathryn Bernardo and Daniel Padilla stayed connected to each other, their hands interlocked as they gave everyone time to click their celfone cameras.

In fact, they were holding hands the whole time they were at The Philippine STAR for a scheduled visit Thursday afternoon, a day after their latest movie, Star Cinema’s Barcelona: A Love Untold, shot in Spain, opened nationwide to the tune of, according to Star Cinema sources, a staggering P25 million (with more theaters added, now numbering 270 around the country).

Behind dark glasses, Daniel couldn’t hide signs of the flu that downed him recently, cutting his participation in the movie’s promo, resting assured that Kathryn could take care of everything, thank you.

As Daniel’s nurse, Kathryn stuck to his side when not busy with work.

Asked how she was as a nurse, Kathryn said, “Istriktang nurse. I kept checking if he had eaten already and reminding him to take his medicines, at tapusin kung ilang days ‘yung antibiotics. I saw to it that he eats on time and to rest. Kinukulit ko siya.”

Did you listen to your nurse? We asked Daniel.

He cast a loving look at Kathryn and pressed his hand over hers before he replied, “Oo naman po.”

Kathryn’s smile disappeared when informed that her and Daniel’s lips-to-lips kiss went viral right on the movie’s opening day…what a spoiler!!! That kiss serves as the movie’s highlight which was kept “confidential” even among the media guys who were curious and inquisitive at the pre-showing presscon.

How many takes did director Olivia “Inang” Lamasan call to perfect that scene?

“Only one take,” said Daniel.

After how many, uhm, rehearsals?

“There was no rehearsal,” shared Kathryn.

Is it their first mildly passionate kiss onscreen? What about off screen?

How did they feel during the shoot? (They thought it was a rehearsal until their Inang told them that that was it…that it was a take.)

“Nervous,” smiled Kathryn, “pero inalagaan naman talaga ni Inang. She guided us.”

“Kinabahan,” said Daniel, “and excited,” prompting Kathryn to roll her eyes a bit. “Kelangan na rin naman mapanood ng tao,” added Daniel.

They laughed and laughed when asked how each other’s lips tasted. (When Alden Richards was asked the same question…about his and Maine Mendoza’s kissing scene at the ending of their solo starrer Imagine You & Me…he admitted, “Her lips tasted like cherry.”)

“We use the same brand of lip balm,” Daniel finally confessed.

Together for more than five years now starting when they were in their teens (Daniel is 21, Kathryn is 20), the loveteam is comfortable with each other’s family which could be a sign that, yes, they approve of whatever there is between the kids.

Really now, what is the real score between them? (I reminded them not to give the usual alibi “we are just friends” or “we are exclusively dating” or “our relationship has no label.”)

Daniel: “We are not only friends, we are more than that. Very special kami sa isa’t-isa. Hindi naman namin kelangang sabihin, kitang-kita naman nila.”

Oh, action speaks louder than words, huh!

Daniel: “Halata naman ng tao at kami rin mismo. Hindi na rin namin naitatago.”

True enough, as they walked back to their car, Daniel and Kathryn were at ease holding hands as more employees followed them for more selfies.

Yes, they needed not say it with words. They simply let their hands tell the whole story.
