TNT pilots catchy ‘Gen Z’ theme song

Yugel Losorata - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - In 2013, the songwriting duo of Thyro Alfaro and Yumi Lacsamana proved that their inclination to catchy pop could spell real magic by winning Philpop’s grand prize with their composition Dati.

Their collaboration once again rose to the challenge with their recent work for prepaid mainstream mobile brand TNT called It’s a Tropa Thing. The jingle, which they themselves recorded along with rapper Quest, boasts a deliriously melodious and danceable chorus that embraces youth and camaraderie; so strong the melody one almost doesn’t notice that the words to it revolve just around the title itself.

The verse run, clinging to some street-smart barkada lingo, prepares listeners to the engaging pre-chorus couplet that best hooks up with the targeted Generation Z, 13 to 19 age group bracket, especially with lyrics that speak, “Iisang trip, iisang mundo/Isang text lang dyan agad nabubuo.”

“The duo of Thyro and Yumi have proven themselves well and I am glad that I got myself into this track, too,” implied Quest who obviously took care of the rap portions of the jingle that come in the middle and yes, in the intro part.

The seemingly out-of-the-box idea to open the track with a rap right away showcases that this is quite a jingle to listen to over and over. The first eight seconds gave the rising rapper the moment to invite today’s young with the lines, “Para sa mga hindi mabubuwag, samahang di matitibag/ Ang awiting ito awitin ninyo, sa akin, sa’yo, sa atin ito.”

“TNT specifically wants to cater to the needs of the Pinoy Generation Z, an age group that identifies with their own tropa who share their aspirations, give them inspiration and just help them get through the day. With TNT’s most affordable offers and exciting treats, they can easily stay connected with their tropa and enjoy more fun-filled moments with each other,” said first vice president and head of Wireless Consumer Operations for Smart Kat Luna-Abelarde.

TNT, under Smart Communications, is touted as the largest prepaid mainstream mobile brand in the country, now “refreshed” with a younger app-inspired look and a teenage set of ambassadors dubbed TNT Tropa. The group was introduced by their first names April, Brent, Kelly, Ian and Renzo. In a TVC, Brent is given spotlight as a boyfriend (to a certain Jane) who awkwardly forgets they’re celebrating their monthsary. Problem solved as he gets by with a little help from friends.

The quintet will be at Robinsons Ermita tomorrow, June 26 and SM Lipa on July 9, among other tour dates.

Following the launch of the TNT Tropa at Book and Borders Café in Morato Q.C. that’s partly owned by GMA Kapuso star Benjamin Alves, the brand has geared up for “tropa-perfect” offers, giving subscribers more budget-friendly calls, texts, their favorite apps and other treats.
