CEBU, Philippines - Incoming Grade 9 student Felmarie Iglesia was recently crowned Miss Lamac 2016 in a glittering ceremony held at the Lamac auditorium in Pinamungajan town. The Sta. Monica Academy honor student bested nine other contenders including her first-degree cousin Aika Marie Iglesia, who was her first runner-up.

The other runners-up are Donna Fe Sumampong (second); Joan Jane Quiaot (third); and Chaizzl Lynn Ponting (fourth). Completing the finalists were Wendelyn Tuquib, Ronamie Mahusay, Ma. Ericka Tunacao, Hanny Generalao and Mary Christie Bongco. Aika Marie won Best in Fun Wear, while Joan Jane was Best in Gown.

Felmarie got the judges’ nod for her answer to the final question, wherein she emphasized the role of human beings as stewards of God’s creation, especially nature. She urged everyone to stop all activities that contribute to global warming.

The two-year-old pageant did not fail to showcase extraordinary things a somewhat-ordinary and far-flung community like Lamac could offer to the rest of the world. Lamac community is enclosed in a caldero-like body of land not known to many. It is a pleasant surprise for all visitors that, after traversing the hilly, rocky, and forested road, a beautiful paradise greets them as they enter the area.

Lamac is the home of Lamac Multipurpose Cooperative (LMPC), one of the country’s richest and most successful coops. It also boasts of the famous Hidden Valley Mountain and Wave Pool Resorts.

The young candidates emphasized why Lamac deserves to be named as the summer capital of the south by donning fun wear creations designed by Carlee Alferez. The fun wear was cool, elegant, fun, and playful – the very characteristics that aptly define Lamac.

LMPC general manager Ellen Limocon said the coop’s youth laboratory manned the entire fiesta activities, including the Miss Lamac pageant, as their way of fulfilling their social responsibilities.

“It has been the coop’s tradition to support the annual fiesta because this is the only way we could give back to the community. San Isidro Labrador did not fail to intercede for us so that God gives as abundant blessings continuously. The Miss Lamac showcases our culture and the gift of nature that God has entrusted to us. It sends an invitation to both local and international tourists to visit our place,” said Limocon, who has been the coop’s general manager since 1983.

Miss Lamac 2016 was made possible through the efforts of the organizing committee headed by Justine Lynn Limocon and Kevin Paslon.  (FREEMAN)
