Classical and popular musical artist

REMEMBER WHEN? - The Philippine Star

In her musical career which spanned more than three decades, Conching Rosal switched from classical to popular entertainment. And vice versa.

From the ’50s to ’80s, Conching starred in opera: Carmen (in Tagalog), Aida, Madame Butterfly, La Gioconda. She played the title role in the zarzuela Ang Kiri.

Conching teamed up in concerts with Tribung Pinoy, Evelyn Mandac, Sylvia La Torre and Eleanor Calbes.

Although hailed as one of the country’s greatest sopranos, Conching was not beyond appearing in popular radio-TV and stage shows, one of which was DZPI’s Rum Caña Fiesta, sharing the limelight with the likes of Pablo Virtuoso, Lopito and Patsy. Also featured was Don David who, like Conching, was also a classical singer. They were together in Carmen.

Conching was also famous for her recordings in kundiman.

This columnist was very close to and a long-time friend of Conching. I was a major sponsor in her concerts produced by her husband, lawyer-impresario Louie Pimentel. I helped in the production of what would have been her last album, various renditions of Ave Maria. But at that time, she was already battling cancer, which led to her death in 1985. Conching was able to record only five songs, not enough for a recording album. — RKC
