A fight to end modern slavery

DIRECT LINE - Boy Abunda - The Philippine Star

In this fast-paced world heavily influenced by technology, progress has never been more rapid. In line with the technological revolution, we are given the freedom to speak and express our opinions through social media and other accessible medium. Most people enjoy this freedom, forgetting that to some, this is only a dream. Unknown to most, there are still places in the world where freedom is a privilege.

In this day and age, there are currently more than 30 million enslaved laborers, the highest number in the history of mankind. Just what do we mean by enslaved laborers? Men, women and children who are sold into a $150B industry where they are exploited for sex and labor. This is still widespread up to today in almost every supply chain in every industry, including food, electronics, vehicle and apparel manufacturing.

In the hopes of bringing awareness to modern slavery, the #BuyOutSlavery movement, fronted by History Asia, San Francisco-based NGO, Not For Sale, a charity organization and The CNN Freedom Project, aims to make a positive impact on modern slavery through an online social movement across Asia. Various celebrities and influencers have pledged their support for this worthy cause by using their voice to bring attention to this uncomfortable truth. Among these celebrities and influencers are Aiko Melendez, Gerphil Flores, Ruby Rodriguez, Pia Guanio-Mago, Giselle Sanchez, Ely Buendia, Basti Artadi, Rovilson Fernandez, Marc Nelson, Patrick Garcia, Meryl Soriano, Tim Yap, Laureen Uy, Princess Violago, Francine Prieto, Walter Demesa, Joel Trinidad, Jonathan Yabut, Armi Millare, Sherwin Gatchalian, siblings Jerika and Jake Ejercito and more.

Dozens of e-commerce sites have also partnered with the #BuyOutSlavery movement by involving their online shopping platforms in reaching out to and educating their loyal shoppers. Together, local celebrities and e-commerce sites have helped engage online communities in the hopes of liberating enslaved laborers around the world.

Visit buyoutslavery.com to find out more on how you can contribute to this worthy advocacy. Together, with the power of one voice, we can all help end modern slavery and ensure a safe and free future for each human being.
