Bakit Manipis Ang Ulap Unflinching love & ultimate choice

Pablo A. Tariman - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – The new TV5 teleserye based on Danny Zialcita’s 1985 film, Bakit Manipis Ang Ulap, opens with a grand wedding of Bernard Palanca who plays brother of Diether Ocampo.

Both pursue Marla Alvarez played by Claudine Barretto who attends the wedding and watches the ceremony while constantly replaying her happy past with the groom in her mind.

Still hopeful she can get back her loved one, she literally disrupts the wedding and attempts to win back the groom which startles the bride and the entire wedding entourage.

She is told to go away, to face the reality that she is not meant for him and a year later, she starts all over again by working in a restaurant.

But the groom’s brother George Ilagan (Diether) is also after her but she firmly says no.

In the restaurant where she works, one business magnate pretends as an ordinary customer and tries all the tricks in the trade to win her. But she is obviously still infatuated with her married lover and had one more fling with him. When he doesn’t show up in the next meeting, the moment of truth comes: He has left her for good.

She turns to the determined suitor in the restaurant, says yes to the marriage proposal. She is mildly shocked that she actually married a rich businessman played with gusto by Cesar Montano.

Thus her new married life begins as the magnate’s new wife.

New groom takes Marla on a helicopter ride where he shows off his vast property.

Meanwhile, Diether’s character has resigned to his fate. Later in the story, he is pursued by a young woman who happens to be the daughter of Leo Cabrera (Cesar).

How the magnate’s wife (Claudine) will deal with former persistent suitor (Diether), now the lover of her husband’s daughter (Meg Imperial) is the stuff of suspense that wraps up the first few episodes of Bakit Manipis Ang Ulap directed by Joel Lamangan.

This is obviously another acting challenge for Claudine who as Marla shows unflinching love for her married lover only to turn to another suitor as fallback position.

She is a thoroughly hopeless character as she is helpless trying to figure out her life without the man she adores.

Claudine plays this part with sensitivity. Bernard is convincing as the heartless married Lothario. Diether as the discarded suitor shows off his well-sculpted body and offers everything he has for her young lover.

There’s a lot going for this new teleserye as the characters collide head-on with past relationships.

You begin to wonder how the business magnate will cope with his daughter whose lover is his wife’s former suitor.

In this teleserye, you will see corporate characters likely to collide head-on with personages in their private lives.

But as the pilot episodes show, there is a lot to expect from this teleserye and a lot of revelations that will keep teleserye fans glued on their TV sets.

Claudine’s Marla is a survivor of unrequited love, Diether’s George is a hunk who can’t get over his first love and Cesar’s Leo is one character who will be torn between his daughter’s obsession and his wife’s former suitor.

Meanwhile, the character of Meg is the pilot episode’s show-stealer as she shows off her body as her instrument for getting men she is obsessed with.

Bakit Manipis Ang Ulap is out to get its share of teleserye audiences and most likely, it will succeed.

The initial episodes are fairly well-handled, the acting is way beyond everyone’s expectations and there is a big hint that some big dramatic confrontations are in store for TV viewers.

Bakit Manipis Ang Ulap debuts tonight at 9 on TV5.
