Celebrating empowered Maranao women

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The culture and tourism councils of the Municipality of Taraka in Lanao del Sur mounted another gathering of the Maranao Women Performers and Entrepreneurs after holding the 2015 Women’s Day celebration last March 23 and 24. Barangay officials as well as representatives from the private sector and the academe attended the colorful event that bannered the theme, So Kilangka-An ko Malong E To-Os ko tiardi.

“We celebrated their success as empowered Maranao women by showcasing their talents on preserving our culture and arts and their personal advocacies,” said Taraka Mayor Nashiba Gandamra Sumagayan during her guesting at Aksyon TV5’s Aksyon sa Umaga hosted by Grace Lee.

The celebration featured Maranao women of all ages, rendering Maranao songs and dances and celebrating local culture like how to wear the malong.

Sumagayan also expressed her gratitude and acknowledged the Muslim women entrepreneurs in the audience, who are an inspiration to many like Dr. Hadja Aminah Usudan, Dr. Minang Shariff, among other Maranao women who have helped push Maranao culture and arts advocacies.

The event highlighted the Maranao Festival and it was a wonderful recollection of past and present shows.
