The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines -Roxy’s Stephanie Gilmore (photo) won her sixth ASP World Champion title recently at the final stop of the 2014 ASP Women’s World Surfing Tour, the Target Maui Pro in Hawaii.

Stephanie entered the event as the defending champion, having claimed consecutive victories at the world-class break in 2007, 2008 and 2009, the last time a world tour event was held at Honolua Bay.

She won her sixth world title after making the quarterfinals and seeing teammate Sally Fitzgibbons, ranked No. 2 in the world, eliminated from the contest by fellow Roxy surfer Bianca Buitendag in their quarterfinals heat, as well as world No. 3 and fellow Aussie Tyler Wright eliminated by Hawaii’s Carissa Moore in the contest final.

Going into the event, Stephanie led the world title race with three tour victories at the Roxy Pro Gold Coast (Australia), the Swatch Women’s Pro Trestles (USA) and the Cascais Women’s Pro (Portugal).
