Marvelous marvels in the movies

Joy Jonette Chuyaco - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - For the past few years, films about comic heroes have been coming out one after another. And why not? Most viewers — both young and old — love them. Among the favorites are films about Marvel heroes. The stories are entertaining, the visual effects are amazing, the fighting scenes are a must-see, the costumes are cool, and the actors are great — simply marvelous. Here are some of our Marvel movie favorites:

Captain America (1944, 1990, 2011, 2014). Steve Rogers dreams to become a soldier and so he tries but doesn’t get in. However, in a sudden turn of events, he becomes the hero people need and love — he is Captain America. He has great strength and ages slowly.

The Fantastic Four (2005). A group of five has gone to outer space for a research mission and comes back to find out that they are no longer ordinary human beings. One can stretch himself like a rubber, another one becomes invisible, then one can create fire, while the other one becomes a rock-like figure, and the last one, who will become their enemy, is fast mutating into something else. Are their powers useful or harmful to mankind?

Blade (1998). It is a movie about a half-human, half-vampire who protects humans from vampires. His name is Blade, and when he is in action he means it. Although there were some changes made in the film compared to the comic version, Blade was still well-received by viewers.

X-Men (2000). X-Men movies always make it to the top every time they’re shown. Fans can’t help but follow the amazing story of these heroic mutants. It’s actually cool to see how these heroes use their special abilities to protect the people and their kind.

Spider-Man (2002). Peter Parker is just an ordinary high-school student until he gets bitten by a genetically modified spider. Everything starts to change: His body and so is his life. He becomes a superhero not only to his loved ones but also to the people of the city, thanks to his Uncle Ben’s reminder about having power and being responsible for it.

Hulk (2003). Bruce Banner used to be an ordinary scientist until that fateful day that changed it all. When in rage, he turns into an uncontrollable, gigantic green monster. He hates himself for being like this but it’s already in him so he might as well accept it and use it for the good. He is part of the SHIELD group as well, protecting people from bad guys.

The Punisher (2004). Things that happen in our lives have a great effect on what we become. Sometimes, it’s good and other times, it’s bad. Frank Castle is a retired FBI who is enjoying his time with his family. But not for long. He is back in action after his family was murdered by someone who wanted to get even with him. In the long run, Frank vows to protect people from the bad guys; thus, calling himself The Punisher.

Marvel’s The Avengers (2012). The team-up of these superheroes in one story is quite interesting. Will they be busy outdoing one another or will they try to be as normal as they possibly can? Each of them has an attitude but one thing is in their mind — to save mankind from any threat. Several cool fighting scenes are in the movie, which make it a must-see.

Thor (2011). He is supposed to be fighting in a battle in their own world but by accident, Thor finds himself on Earth. He becomes part of the SHIELD group as well.

Iron Man (2008). He has the brains. He has the looks. He has the money. And most of all, he has the guts to fight. Tony Stark has brilliantly created his own weapon/costume which gives him the name Iron Man. When he discovers that he has the ability to save men, his heart changes completely.
