Angeli Bayani edges out Vilma Santos, Nora Aunor at 2014 Gawad Urian

MANILA, Philippines – Theater and independent film actress Angeli Bayani took home the Best Actress award for her role in film “Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan” at the 37th Gawad Urian, which held its awards ceremony on Tuesday, June 17.
 
The actress bested heavy favorites Nora Aunor (“Ang Kuwento ni Mabuti”) and Vilma Santos (“Ekstra”).
 
Other nominees for the award include Cheril Gil (“Sonata”), Eugene Domingo (“Instant Mommy”), Agot Isidro (“Mga Anino ng Kahapon”), and Lorna Tolentino (“Burgos”).
 
“Gusto ko lang pong sabihin na kaya ako nao-overwhelm ng ganito ay dahil, una sa lahat, I would like to share this honor to everyone who is nominated,” she said during her acceptance speech. “It was an honor to be nominated alongside such honorable actresses, such brilliant actresses. I feel like this is not happening right now.”
 
“At feeling ko kailangan ko magtago kasi baka... mga Noranians and Vilmanians, okay po tayo, ha? Fan din po ako, maniwala kayo,” Angeli quipped. 
 
“Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan,” which was screened at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival, also won the awards for Best Picture and Best Screenplay.
 
Hannah Espia was named Best Director for her work in “Transit.”
 
Meanwhile, Joel Torre of “On the Job” won Best Actor.
 
“Dati, kapag nakakakuha ka nito, 'I'm very proud.' Ngayon, I'm very humbled. It's a very, very humbling experience,” he said.
 
Angel Aquino received the Best Supporting Actress trophy for her role in “Ang Huling Cha-Cha ni Anita” while Jun-Jun Quintana was named Best Supporting Actor for his work in “A Philippino Story.”

Best Music: Emerson Texon (Sonata)
Best Cinematography: Lauro Rene Manda (Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan)
Best Editing: Chuck Gutierrez (Riddles of My Homecoming)
Best Sound: Corinne de San Jose (On The Job) 
Best Short Film: Missing
Best Documentary: Nanay Mameng
