New phase for Nina’s career

Yugel Losorata - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Nina may have peaked in the past in terms of her capacity to sell an album. Yet, worrying about it is not a concern of her new label Viva Records. Besides, the idea of backing her up is not to surpass her previous achievements, but to empower its belief that she has more to offer as a recording artist.

Nina, who launched her latest album All Good last month, is upbeat feeling that she’s embarking on a new phase career-wise, having told the crowd in a well-attended concert last month that she has “erased all inhibitions to be more daring and provocative.”

Acknowledging the confidence given upon her by Viva’s big boss Vic del Rosario, she said, “I know I’m in good hands now that I’m part of Viva family. I thank Boss Vic for all the encouragement and support, letting me know that I can do more.”

Known for her covers of foreign hits, Nina has done her first all-OPM package for her new CD, reflecting her mindset of thanking back the local music scene that has provided her blessings other lady acts can only dream of. The album is mostly made up of originals, with song contributions from the likes of Jimmy Borja, Vehnee Saturno and Toto Sorioso.

Carrier single is Sa Isang Tingin, which may be a safe choice for radio airplay, with its strong melody somewhat influenced by high-recall Tagalog songs of the yesteryears.

The English title track and final number, Pinilit Kong Limutin Ka, are probably being reserved for strong kicks later in the promotional run. Arguably, the latter two have more melodic appeal than the first single.

“We really believe she has more to showcase and that she is still maturing as a singer,” stated an insider from Viva Records.

Executives from the highly-established record label had been eyeing for the multi-platinum voice after working with her for a couple of shows before. Her version of the classic Don’t Say Goodbye, which served as theme song for the hit movie A Secret Affair, is included in All Good as a bonus track.

The album also boasts few covers of familiar OPM numbers, namely, Hurting Inside, Perfect and Mahal Na Mahal Kita.

“Everything has been going so smoothly. No qualms, no inhibitions,” noted Nina whose recent concert at the Music Museum titled Reborn ensured everyone she is ready for a good run this year.
