A green university goes greener

-

MANILA, Philippines - In an effort to combat the growing threat of global climate change, De La Salle University-Dasmariñas (DLSU-D) recently embarked on DLSU-D Project Carbon Neutral (PCN). This is in support of the initiative of the Lasallian Institute for the Environment that seeks to assess the status of DLSP schools’ carbon footprint to achieve a “green” educational network.

DLSU-D’s PCN team, with its Environmental Resource Management Center (ERMaC) as the team’s lead unit, will conduct steps that would quantify the amount of carbon emission in the university by taking an inventory of the school’s activities generating carbon as against activities offsetting the carbon that is emitted. The team will further spearhead various environmental information and education campaigns that would heighten awareness and encourage action of the whole community in minimizing emission activities that contribute to global warming.

One of the major steps to make DLSU-D Carbon-neutral is the holding of various tree-planting activities. For this year alone, a total of 18,748 seedlings and propagules were already planted by DLSU-D in Mt. Palaypalay Protected Landscape and Seascape, Ternate, Cavite, and in Calatagan, Batangas, to mention some. Modest plant nurseries were also established in the campus for growing trees and other ornamental plants.
