Makati hires 5,000 students for summer jobs

Perseus Echeminada - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Makati city government through its Public Employment Services Office (PESO) hired a total of 5,458 young residents for twin summer programs, the Government Internship Program (GIP) and the Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES).

Under GIP, 3,458 out-of-school youths have been hired out of 3,635 applicants; under SPES, 2,000 students on summer break have been hired out of 2,774 applicants, Makati PESO manager and city personnel officer Vissia Marie Aldon said.

This year, the city government has allocated a P50-million budget for the twin summer programs.

The first batch of GIP has been scheduled from April 17 to May 18 (23 days), and the second batch, from April 26 to May 29 (23 days).

On the other hand, the first batch of SPES has been slated for April 19 until May 31 (30 days), and the second batch, from April 26 to May 31 (25 days).

GIP beneficiaries will receive a daily compensation of P368.25 for a total of P8,469.75 for the entire work period.

SPES beneficiaries will receive P491 as their daily wage for a total of P14,730 (for the first batch) and P12,275 (for the second batch),  with 60 percent coming from the local government unit and 40 percent from the Department of Labor and Employment as program partner. Beneficiaries of the two programs shall work eight hours a day.

Now in its 18th year, GIP aims to provide temporary yet gainful employment to Makati students and out-of-school youth aged 18 to 25.

SPES, on the other hand, was first implemented in 1993,  through Republic Act 9547 amending RA 7323, which strengthened and expanded the coverage of the SPES.
