Cignal, Generika blast foes

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Cignal and Generika-Ayala made short work of their respective foes to end their campaigns on a high note in the 2017 Belo Philippine Superliga (PSL) Invitational Conference yesterday at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan.

The HD Spikers clobbered Foton, 25-20, 25-18, 25-22, while the Lifesavers crushed Cocolife, 25-18, 26-24, 26-24, to settle for a fourth-place finish in the club tourney bankrolled by Asics, Mikasa, Mueller and Senoh with TV5 as official broadcast partner.

It was a well-balanced attack for the HD Spikers as veterans Cherry Vivas and Paneng Mercado did the damage together with Royse Tubino, Jovelyn Gonzaga and Janine Marciano.

Vivas, a former Far Eastern U star, finished with nine points while Mercado had eight markers for Cignal, which displayed its firepower after drawing a combined 19 points from Tubino, Gonzaga and Marciano.

The final placing of Cignal, however, will be decided pending the result of the clash between Petron and guest team Kobe Shinwa Women’s University of Japan, which were still playing in the final match at press time.

Earlier, Patty Orendain fired 13 attacks to finish with 15 points while Gen Casugod had 13 markers laced with three aces to underscore the Lifesavers’ dominance at the attack zone, 43-29, and service box, 6-2.

Despite the impressive showing, Generika-Ayala coach Francis Vicente said the season-opening tourney served as an eye-opener on what they need to work on.
