CHED updates college programs

Janvic Mateo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) is updating the curricula of the different college programs offered in higher education institutions (HEIs) in the country.

CHED chairman Patricia Licuanan, in several notices published in The STAR, released the schedule for the public consultation on the proposed policies, standards and guidelines of various graduate and undergraduate programs.

CHED executive director Julito Vitriolo said the updating of the curricula of the college programs is in line with the implementation of the K to 12 program, which will add two years to basic education in the country.

Under the K to 12 program, some of the general education subjects currently offered in college will be taken up in senior high school, requiring college programs to be updated to prevent duplication.

CHED created technical panels to work on the updated policies, standards and guidelines for the college programs.

Earlier, CHED released the general education program that will be offered starting 2018. The program is currently being questioned before the Supreme Court due to the removal of Filipino subjects in the college curriculum.

Vitriolo said the move to update the programs aims to ensure that the curricula are in line with the outcomes-based education thrust of the government.

Based on the notices, the public consultation on Anthropology and Sociology will be held on Nov. 25, while the consultation for Political Science, Communication and Development Communication will be on Nov. 27.

The consultation on Economics will be on Dec. 1. For Fine Arts, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning consultation is on Dec. 2.

For Philosophy and Foreign Language it is on Dec. 7.

All consultations will be held at the CHED central office in Quezon City.

The consultation for the Physical Therapy program will be held at the University of Santo Tomas on Dec. 4. Consultation on Accountancy, Management Accounting, Internal Audit and Accounting Information Systems programs will be held in Palawan on Nov. 26.

Licuanan called on representatives from HEIs offering the programs as well as representatives from government agencies and other stakeholders to attend the consultations.

A copy of the proposed policies may be downloaded from the CHED website.

CHED said for logistics purposes, only one representative per program, per higher education institution, will be allowed to attend the activity.
