MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Education (DepEd) urged yesterday public school students — both in formal and non-formal schools — to join the Google Philippines’ Doodle 4 Google Program.

A doodle is a decoration Google makes for its logo to celebrate world events and holidays as well as human achievements.

The competition allows students to create their own Google doodle. This year’s theme is “What can I do for the Philippines?”

“We support Google Philippines Inc., in its aim to encourage Filipino youth to be creative both online and offline through Google 4 Doodle,” DepEd Secretary Armin Luistro said.

He said this competition will open opportunities for the Filipino students to learn 21st century skills, which is one of the goals of the K to 12 program.

Doodle 4 Google is a competition held in different countries. Specifically for the Philippines, Google opens the contest for students in non-formal education but are part of the learning system of the DepEd.

Luistro said the agency hopes the program will not only ignite passion for art and culture among the youth but will also inspire them to move for the betterment of the country.

The competition is open to students aged 5 to 17, residing in the Philippines and currently enrolled in formal school or enlisted in an alternative learning system from both public and private schools.

Entries are classified into four groups: 5-8 years old; 9-11 years old;12-14 years old, and 15-17 years old.

Public voting for the finalists will open on Oct. 6 and close on Oct. 26.

Announcement of winners will be on Nov. 8. The overall winning doodle will be featured on Google Philippines’ homepages for 24 hours in November.
