6TH AUBC HOOP: Lancers log 2nd straight victory

- Gabby G. Ma -

The University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers rode on a scintillating 29-point show of Fil-Am giant Gregory Slaughter to annihilate Angeles University Foundation (AUF) Great Danes, 89-69, and take a 2-0 lead in the 6th Asian University Basketball Championship (AUBC) Battle of Champions yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.

The game, however, was marred by the ejection of UV’s Ritchum Dennison and AUF’s Limuel Moises Manarang  for unsportsmanlike behavior. The Lancers led, 69-52, when they were banished from the hardcourt.

The Lancers came strong late in the third period where they start to hit their marks capped by Chris Diputado’s buzzer-beating triple that gave them a 64-51 advantage heading into the final period.

Slaughter was backed up by Harlow Villavil and Diputado with 29 points combined, while Matthew Gray Carney paced AUF with markers followed by Anthony Mallari with 14.

In last Saturday’s opening day, the Lancers debuted with a precarious 83-77win over Hang Yang University, while the aller Huaquaio University defeated AUF, 87-74.

The Koreans wowed the crowd with their quick passing  and  impressive ball rotation.

Despite of the Koreans’ speed, the Lancers were still able to take a 17- point lead twice, the last was at 66-49 towards the end of the third quarter.

The diehard Koreans, however, staged a daring rally to pull within 74-79, on Jo Jae Won’s charities with 1:17 left in the game. That was the best they could muster as the Lancers hung on to a marginal six-point triumph, asserting their lofty billing as a seven-time CESAFI champion.Dennison had 17 points for the Lancers in their game against Korea, while Slaughter and Harlow Chad Villanil scored 15 points apiece.

Hang Yang’s Song Chang Yong finished with 16 points followed by Lee Sang Il with 15.

The scores:

UV (89) - Slaughter 29, Villanil 15, Diputado 14, Lanete 9, Cincoflores 6, Sendrijas 5, Mercader 5, Lao 3, Dennison 2, Lasala 1
