CEBU, Philippines — The Governor's Cup Volleyball Tournament 2018 formally kicked off with Dalaguete coasting to a dominant victory over Oslob in the South Division bracket 1 opener yesterday at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex.

Dalaguete found Oslob belles a tough customer to handle, nevertheless they cruised to a 25-12, 25-13 victory.

Dalaguete lady spikers started strong with a 4-0 blast but they also committed some service errors. Mary Grace Yrauda carried Oslob’s offensive load but can only do so much as Dalaguete staged another scoring rally.

Dalaguete’s coach Ignatio Alonso reminded his team to not be complacent and her players responded as they went for the kill in the second set powered by Rica Indig, Elaiza Sestoso, Julienne Mangubat and Kathleen Soten.

Earlier, Cebu Governor Hilario Davide III,  the guest of honor and keynote speaker in the formal opening, is overwhelmed by the participation of the different cities and municipalities in the province of Cebu.

“I am happy with this tournament and I am looking forward to the second edition of the basketball event on April. I am hoping that whoever sits in the Capitol will maintain this tournament that will help young athletes in developing character and virtues,” said Davide.

Davide III is joined by Vice-governor Agnes Magpale, Cebu Provincial board members and Cebu Provincial Sports Commission led by its executive director Ramil Abing.

The Gov's Cup has attracted a total of 29 local government units (LGUs) who will vie for the supremacy, with 17 teams from the North and 12 from the South.

The Cebu Province will shell out huge bounty to the winners, with the grand champion receiving P300,000. The second to fourth will take home P200,000, P100,000 and P50,000, respectively.

The tournament focuses on the 18-under age group. (FREEMAN)
