Lunghi Runners-Singapore supports JPD grassroots program
CEBU, Philippines — Showing support to John Philip Dueñas (JPD) grassroots program, the first Lunghi Run Cebu will give hundreds of free slots to young Cebuano runners.
The charity run, which features the 6K and 12K categories, will take place on March 25 at the Vibo Place in Escario Street, Cebu City.
Spearheaded by Ali Akbar of Lunghi Runners- Singapore in cooperation with TAD Runners and Hello Kitty Runner-Cebu,the organizers will give 400 slots to aspiring athletes. They will also donate the proceeds of the run to coach Dueñas program to help in developing more running champions.
"I am very grateful that they (Lunghi Runners) have chosen our grassroots to be their beneficiary as this will be a big help in further training the kids as well as in identifying more potential," said Dueñas in a press conference the other night at the Cebu Grand Hotel.
Dueñas is the long-time coach of Cebuana Olympian Mary Joy Tabal.
"We encourage all the runners to participate because this is not just an ordinary run. You are not only running for fun and fitness but you also run to help kids reach their goals," said Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Tabal.
Meanwhile, Akbar said that one of his goals is to promote friendship and respect among runners."My idea is to bring all people together regardless of their race or religion. This is the first Lunghi Run in the Philippines and hopefully this would come out successful," he said.
There are no prizes for the winners but all finishers will be given a specially-designed finisher's medal made in Singapore. Special awards will also be given to the most creative runners, sexiest runner, oldest and youngest runner.
Registration fee is pegged at P560 for 6K and P650 for 12K inclusive of race singlet and post-race refreshments. One may register at Cebu City Sports Center or online at www.race.ph. (FREEMAN)
