CEBU, Philippines — Richard Natividad fought to a draw with Edsel Montoya in the final round and that was all he needed to rule the 2018 Duke Harris III and Voltaire Sevillano Memorial Handicapping Chess Tournament last Saturday at the Basement 2 of Robinsons Galleria Cebu.

Natividad completed the 7-round Swiss system competition with the highest output of 6.5 points to pocket the P5,000 champion’s purse.

Montoya figured in a three-way tie with Mario Mangubat and Carlos Moreno III on identical 6.0 points, but Mangubat took the second place honors courtesy of a higher tie-break output applying the Bucholz system.

Montoya placed third followed by Moreno.

Cheran Bartolata and Aldwin Ducalan were at joint fifth and sixth place with 5.5 points, while Rommel Ganzon, FIDE Master Anthony Makinano, Diego Abraham Caparino and Jethro Esplanada rounded up the top 10 finishers with 5.0 points each. — EBV (FREEMAN)
