Velo Cebu Expo Show: For your eyes only

ALLEZ - Jose Vicente Araneta - The Freeman

This coming weekend, December 15-17, Cebu’s Finest will strut their stuff at the SM Seaside, Cube Hall.

cebucyling.com, through Michael Flores and Kiko Lim, decided to bring back the event after being dormant for many years. CC had already done the same show twice successfully both cycling aficionados thought that it was time to bring it back again!

It’s been a while since the last show and a lot of new, aerodynamic and exotic stuff have made their way to the Queen City of the South.

Although I don’t agree with the idea, some of these bicycles are just too good to ride, meaning, they’re just too good to get dusty and dirty. You don’t display the Mona Lisa anytime and anywhere.

Italian brands like the venerable Colnago, Chris Froome’s Tour de France race winning bicycle, Pinarello, will be there. American brands will also be present: Parlee, Cannondale, Specialized, Yeti and Sycip. Then there are the German brands who are making a name for themselves lately led by Canyon and AX Lightness, with the latter known for their ultralight wheel sets and very pricy small parts.  British brand Factor and Czech Republic’s Festka will also be represented.

Exhibitors from all around the Visayas region will also be vying for titles that will handed out for the prettiest, lightest– although this is still unofficial, well, you get the picture. Judges from within the industry will be tasked to decide which bicycle is the cream of the crop.

So if you want to see your dream bicycle in the flesh, don’t miss the VELO CEBU EXPO SHOW this weekend.

Chris froome will do the giro-tour double

The biggest news this week was the announcement that Tour de France and Vuelta a Espana champion will be riding the Giro d’Italia next year. You might say that this is not news, cyclist will always race but, riding the Giro-Tour double and more importantly winning it is another story. And the reason is that the Giro is as hard, if not harder than the Tour. And with just a few weeks sandwich between the two, it would be too much to ask of your body to do the double and win it. Remember that the last rider to win was the late, great Italian, Marco Pantani, 20 years ago!

Last year, Colombian rider Nairo Quintana and former Giro winner attempted the double but he needed 2nd to Tom Duoulin in the Italian race. A few weeks later, he faded badly during the Tour. It was so bad that even his Nairo’s Dad came to his rescue blaming the team for the fiasco.

Can Froome really do it? Well, I’d rather that he would focus his sights on his 5th and Tour tying 5th win instead of the double. But then again, on second though, what’s life without attempting something new and different. Froome should go for it!
