UC, Unit 5 dominate
CEBU, Philippines — The University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters and Unit 5 basked in the glow of championship glory as the week-long 27th Cebu City Olympics finally came to an end yesterday at Robinsons Galleria Cebu.
UC defended its crown in the secondary division with 59 golds, 45 silvers and 29 bronzes, way ahead of the University of San Carlos (USC) and the University of the Visayas (UV), which finished second and third with 32-32-35 and 20-13-9 medal hauls, respectively.
UC and USC may be rivals in the secondary class, but in the elementary level, they combined forces well along with City Central School and Zapatera District to deliver the overall title for Unit 5 with 44 gold, 42 silver and 27 bronze medals. Unit 7 placed second with a 27-22-11 g-s-b tally followed by Unit 3 with a 14-6-6 medal count.
UC snared additional two golds in chess behind the efforts of Chris Aldritz Pondoyo and Duan Borgonia. Its archery team also made its presence felt with eight golds spearheaded by Nino Maandig and Khalin Alex Abella.
“The coaches are simply motivated. When the coaches are motivated, they train the athletes well. Given the hardwork of the coaches and trainers, the athletes, of course, are also pushed to give their best,” said UC athletic department head Jessica Jawad-Honoridez. (FREEMAN)
