27th Cebu City Olympics; Tankers deliver golds for UC

CEBU, Philippines — The University of Cebu pulled away from its rivals in Day 5 of the 27th Cebu City Olympics at the Cebu City Sports Center yesterday.

UC stamped its class in swimming with seven more golds, seven silvers and nine bronzes. This padded its lead in the secondary division with 34 gold, 20 silver and 16 bronze medals.

Karen Mae Indaya led UC’s charge at the pool after dominating the 200m freestyle with a record-breaking time of two minutes and six seconds. She also won the 400m freestyle with a time of 4:49;97.

UC also had a 1-2 finish in the 800m freestyle with Micah Marie Dela Serna and Bencynt Ghail Luage.

Other gold medalists for UC are Jobert Indaya in 100m breastroke and Justin Reign Garrido in 100m breakstroke

Paref-Springdale’s Andrew Kim Remolino, for his part, also registere a new record in the 800m freestyle with a time of 10:23:43.

The rest  of the new record holders in swimming were Juliet Allysa Sedeno in the 50m backstroke with 35.41 clocking and Unit 5’s elementary girls’freestyle relay team with a time of 2:25.56.

Aside from swimming, UC also grabbed three more medals in athletics courtesy of sprinters MartChan Torregosa and Josie Inemedo and long jumper Thunan Jehn Baculot.

The University of San Carlos stayed at second spot with 23 gold, 22 silver and 21 bronze medals, while University of the Visayas occupied the third place with 16-21-7 gold-silver-medal performance.

In the elementary level, the combined forces of UC, USC and City Central remains on top with 33 golds, 28 silvers and 17 bronzes.

The University of the Visayas-led Unit 7 grabbed the second place with 24-15-8 as Unit 1 settled for third with 8-3-1 gold-silver-bronze medal tally. (FREEMAN)
