USPF girls win first CESAFI title in 7 years
CEBU, Philippines — The University of Southern Philippines Foundation belles ended their seven year title drought with a four-setter over Southwestern University-Phinma in Game 3 to claim the secondary girls volleyball title in the 2017 Cebu Schools Athletic Federation, Inc. (CESAFI) yesterday at the University of San Carlos gym.
After being overpowered by SWU in the opening set, 23-25, the USPF girls showed superb spiking skills this time in their 25-15 performance in the second set.
With momentum on their side, the girls of coach Yolanda Rizarri continued their relentless attack in the third set anchored by Mitzi Panangin, Anna Marie Cuerbo, Ressel Pedroza and Jum Gayo for a 22-15 advantage.
SWU spikers tried to force a deciding set with an early lead, 15-22, in the fourth set, but USPF proved to be the hungrier squad as they mount a rally to close out the game, 25-23.
"It was an unbelievable fourth set. All I can say is that the girls really gave their best to win the championship,” said Rizarri. “What makes this team special is that their character as a person and as a player, makita gyud nimo sa ilang mata ang competitiveness."
