USC spikers reign supreme
CEBU, Philippines — The University of San Carlos spikers swept the Southwestern University-Phinma in ther best-of-three finals series anchored on a four set victory in Game 2 to capture the secondary boys volleyball crown of the 2017 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) season yesterday at the University of Southern Philippines Foundation gym.
After their nerve-wracking win over five sets in the opener, the USC boys fought with sheer courage and determination to pull off a 25-21, 21-25, 25-17, 28-26 victory.
USC started aggressively with Ruel Sarnejo leading the charge, but failed SWU immediately bounced back in the next set.
USC spikers kept their momentum and went hot in the third set as SWU players were plagued by errors. The second stringers also contributed big as USC cruised in the third set.
John Rey Sanico carried the offense for USC in the fourth canto but SWU spikers showed that they were determined to steal the win. After a 26-all deadlock, Kenrry Malinis’ ace and Vincent Jericho Lauren’s drop shot seal the victory for USC.
“I saw that my players really wanted to end it tonight (yesterday).Lahi ra ilang confidence karon,” said USC coach Jessie Yongco. “The boys were motivated by all our setbacks in the past.”
In the girls finals action, USPF belles forced a deciding Game 3 after a 25-23, 25-14, 25-20, victory over SWU. – (FREEMAN)
