UC Webmasters clinch semis spot in CESAFI

CEBU, Philippines — The University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters had a tentative start but picked up their offensive rhythm in the second quarter, then pounded the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Wildcats in the third on the way to post a crucial 82-68 win in the 17th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) men's basketball tournament last night at the Cebu Coliseum.

Six-foot-eight Cameroonian import Frederick Elombi dished out another all-around performance as the Webmasters locked up a semifinal spot with a 6-5 win-loss record.

Elombi unloaded 24 points on top of 16 rebounds, five steals and three assists while John Calvin Jabello chipped in 11 markers for the Webmasters, whose lackluster start brought them to a three-point lead only after the first 10 minutes of play, 20-17.

But after closing the first half with a 41-31 advantage, things changed dramatically for the Webmasters as they handcuffed the Wildcats to only seven points in the third quarter while torching 22 to rip the game apart, 63-38, heading into the final period.

The biggest lead of the Webmasters though stood at 29 points, 67-38, with still 8:42 left to play.

The Wildcats staged a scorching rally sparked by Dante Alexander Simmons in the closing minutes but obviously the Webmasters have already piled up enough points to secure a spot in the round of four for the first time in five years.

Mark Kong had 15 points while Simmons scored all his 13 points in the fourth period for the Wildcats, who bowed out with only one victory in 11 games. (FREEMAN)
