Fighter Fifty survives SanRem

The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Fighter Wine Fighter Fifty served early notice on its serious title campaign after it downed the equally-tough San Remigio Properties, 86-84, in the open/commercial division of the 2017 Mayor Eddie Gullas Cup basketball tournament the other night at the Talisay City Sports Complex.

Joseph Nalos sparkled with 28 points and Jayford Rodriquez chipped in 18 markers as Fighter Fifty joined SG/ARQ Builders and Dumlog/Kimlex in the winners' circle of the seven-team joust that offers P80,000 bounty to the champion.

Danny Aying, Bernie Bregondo and Eliud Poligrates each scored 11 for Fighter Fifty, which held on its ground in the closing minutes after blowing hot and cold in the early goings. The Wine Makers lost a 26-16 lead in the first quarter but regained their offensive touch in the third, then parried a spirited endgame resistance by SanRem to pull off a two-point squeaker.

Cebuano PBA D-League star Mark Jayven Tallo topped SanRem with 16 points, Harold Cincoflores and Raffy Octubre finished with 11 points each and Franz Arong had 10 for a losing cause.

As of this writing last night, SG-ARQ shoots for its second straight victory as it tackled Kimlex, while ASPA and Shereen, who both faltered in their opening assignments, hope to barge into the win column as they take on each other at 8:30 p.m. today.

Meanwhile, in the inter-barangay level, Lawaan III escaped past Poblacion, 98-95, to move a win away from the juniors division semifinals.
