All set for Macrohon open cagefest
Mayor Alan Jose Kuizon Aroy wants to give his constituents a sporting treat by spearheading an open invitational basketball tournament featuring some of the country's top commercial players, former PBA cagers and rising collegiate stars on September 21-24 in Macrohon, Southern Leyte.
CEBU, Philippines — Exciting hardcourt action returns to the bustling town of Macrohon in Southern Leyte with the staging of an open invitational basketball tournament on September 21-24 that dangles close to P300,000 in cash prize to the top performers. The cash-rich tilt serves as one of the highlights of Macrohon's annual fiesta celebration in honor of their beloved patron Saint Michael the Archangel.
"In keeping with our tradition of commemorating this annual event with so much aplomb and fanfare, we have lined up various activities, foremost of which is the holding of this open basketball tournament," said Macrohon Mayor Alan Jose Kuizon Aroy. "Also, we want to treat our people with a highly entertaining basketball show featuring some of the country's elite players because that is something they seldom see."
"Through this, we hope to inspire our youth to indulge themselves in sports, nuture their talents and try to become the best athletes they could possibly be," added mayor Aroy.
A total of five teams with representation from the three major islands of the country will see action in the four-day joust that will kick off tomorrow.
These are the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers-manned Team Samsam Gullas, Fighter Wine Fighter 50 and Dondel Basketball of Cebu, Aksyon-Agad Team ComVal of Compostela Valley Governor Jayvee Tyron L. Uy, and Cocolife Hobe-Macway Hobe of Manila.
Among the contenders, Hobe-Macway is the strongest owing to its four ex-PBA players in Bonbon Custodio, Jerwin Gaco, Roger Yap and Sunday Salvacion.
They will play in a single round robin format, with the top two teams at the end of elimination automatically slugging it out for the championship in a winner-take-all affair.
The champion will take home P100,000, while the second and third placers will pocket P75,000 and P50,000, respectively. No team will go home empty-handed as the fourth and fifth will receive P30,000 and P20,000.
Aside from the hefty cash bounty, the Macrohon LGU also offers free transportation, accommodation and meals to all participants during the entire duration of the tournament that will be under the supervision of noted league organizer and talent scout Van Halen Parmis. (FREEMAN)
