Cebu’s toughest race, Tabuelan 226 triathlon unfurls

CEBU, Philippines — The Tabuelan 226, Cebu’s longest and toughest triathlon event, kicks off early morning today in the municipality of Tabuelan.

Spearheaded by the host town Mayor Rex Gerona, himself a hardcore triathlete himself, the race features the 3.8-kilometer swim, 180K bike and 42.2K run.

Gun start is scheduled at 7 a.m., with a cut-off time of two hours and 20 minutes for the swim, 10 hours and 10 minutes for the bike and 17 hours for the run.

Those who will not make it to the finish line by 12 midnight of September 17  will be marked DNF (did not finish). However, those who decide to continue if they fail to make to the cut-off will still be allowed to do so.

The categories to be contested are the 18-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 50-59 and 60-above age groups.

The distaff side though has attracted only 10 entries in Cynthia Fe Beichez Ras (18-29), Vanessa Redgrace Agdon, Rosemarie Reyes, Pam Apuhin, Anais Lahid, and Marita Naz (30-39) and Mary Luz Shimizu, Maria Norisa Goc-ong, May Anne Mares and Malona Alinsug (40-49).

On the other hand, the relay event drew 10 teams including two from Tabuelan led by Mayor Gerona. The other contenders are Pablo Garcia III’s Tri GGC, AWA, LSC, Organique, Rider Omega Pro/Jeromes, Kangen/ETS/Humanity, Generika and Maxi Atletika.

Cash prizes will be given away to the top three male and female overall finishers, while trophies will be handed out to the top three in the age-groups as well as in the relay. (FREEMAN)
