SWU-Phinma belles top Tanduay-PVF beach volleyball

CEBU, Philippines - Southwestern University-Phinma belles Janelle Cabahug and Ivie Bautista bagged the women’s crown of the Tanduay Athletics-PVF’s National Inter-collegiate women’s beach volleyball championships at the Cantada Sports Center in Taguig City, yesterday.

Both first timers, Cabahug and Bautista upended the tandem of Cielo and Charmaine Palahang of Rizal Technological University, 25-19, 18-21, 15-12, in the championship round.

The SWU-Phinma girls defeated the duo from the University of Luzon in their first assignment followed by straight-set victories over Jose Maria College and RTU girls of Manila.

SWU-Phinma then pulled off a 21-13, 21-16 win over Cagayan de Oro’s Capital University before facing RTU again in the finals.

Cabahug and Bautista pounced on the RTU duo with precise attacks and solid defense in the first set, but were unable to match the ferocity of the Palahang sisters in the second. SWU girls showed extreme composure as they managed to recover and win the final set.

This is only the second time that Cabahug and Bautista played together and their first title in two outings. — (FREEMAN)
