Savio leads opening day winners

CEBU, Philippines - Team Savio announced its serious title retention bid with a 71-43 demolition of Chavez under group C of the Don Bosco Alumni Basketball Tournament 2016 over the weekend at the Don Bosco Technology Center gymnasium in Barangay Punta Princesa, Cebu City.

Big man John Velasco led Savio’s surge with 15 points, while beanpole Arbinson Gabison contributed 10 points as the formidable duo dominated the much shorter frontline of Chavez the entire game.

In the group C match-up, Caravario outslasted Zatti, 57-30. RJ Acha paced Caravario with 11 points.

In group D action, Joe Marlo Pono had 17 points as Team Mertens blasted Team Vicuña, 70-38, while Dean Padoga had 14 points to lift Caffasco past Orione, 46-40.

In group B play, last year’s runner-up Team Srugi dominated Team Vecchi 75-39 behind the combined 35-point output of Joirene Salcedo, Chriad Bacalso and Keane John Matias.

The Passarelle team of DBTC Greywolves bannered mostly by players below 15 years old proved it can play with the big boys in a 67-31 whacking of Beltrami.

In group A games, Malvin Angel Malicdem had 12 points as Clifford topped Rua, 68-55, while Magone joined the opening day blowout with a 109-39 massacre of Namuncura.
