CESAFI to hold basic life support workshop

CEBU, Philippines - A historical first. This is what the CESAFI and the Philippine Heart Association will achieve when they conduct a Basic Life Support seminar/workshop for CESAFI athletes tomorrow at the Cebu Coliseum.

This was disclosed by CESAFI physician Dr. Rhoel Dejaño along with Dr. Francisco Chio and Dr. Brett Batoctoy, President and Past President, respectively, of the Philippine Heart Association-Cebu Chapter.

The workshop, “Save a life. Learn CPR” is aimed at training CESAFI coaches and athletes on valuing life, the importance of learning CPR and how to conduct CPR. “One doesn’t have to be a doctor to save lives. When a situation arises in sports, whether this be at practice or a game, we must all be ready and equipped to save lives,” Dejaño stressed.

The PHA-Cebu Chapter will be in full force with a team of volunteer doctors and crew that will be training CESAFI coaches and athletes from the different sports. This will be a first in CESAFI history wherein all of its coaches and athletes will be gathered under one roof.

Dr. Ma. Celine Aquino will conduct a lecture on Basic CPR, and this will be followed by a hands-on demonstration and workshop where all participants will be tasked to conduct CPR under the supervision of the PHA-Cebu Chapter team.

CESAFI Commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy Jr. said the league was very grateful for this rare opportunity, recalling the tragic deaths of PBA player Gilbert Bulawan of Blackwater recently and 17-year old Carl Jimwell 'CJ' Servillon of the Jose Rizal University high school team last year.

“We recognize the importance of saving lives and are very thankful to the Philippine Heart Association-Cebu Chapter for this partnership,” he said. (FREEMAN)
