Compostela to host maiden duathlon event

CEBU, Philippines - The town of Compostela in northern Cebu will be hosting an off-road duathlon for the first time billed as the Primary Group of Builders (PGB) Duathlon on July 17.

Event organizer Baltazar 'Bal' Ortega, Jr. said they will push through with their race even if there's another duathlon event taking place on that day.

Ortega said they are expecting around 150 participants from all over the Visayas to join the two-in-one tilt organized by the Sicad Club of Primary Structures Corporation, which is under the umbrella of PGB.

Held in partnership with the Compostela LGU under Mayor Joel Quiño, the charity race is for the benefit of less fortunate individuals who wanted to become technical or vocational scholars through the Primary Structures Educational Foundation, Inc. (PSEFI), a TESDA-certifoed training and assessment center for all construction related trades.

The categories to be contested are the men's 29-below, 30-39, 40-above, mixed relay and women's open.

Entry fee is pegged at P500 for the individual battle and P800 for the relay inclusive of a race kit, finisher's shirt, medal and post-race meal.

Though a fund-raiser, the top three winners in each class will st8080 Sogod Triathlonall show in southern Philippines, Mayor Asis has vowed to spearhead an even grander sporting spectacle in Bayugan.

"The goal for this year is to make sports one of the priorities of the city. Given the clamor and the success of the said undertaking, the city is looking forward to host more tournaments specifically the PCCL, Palarong Pambansa and even the University Games. I am personally looking forward to that this year," said Mayor Asis.  (FREEMAN)
