SWU belles cop Shakey’s GVL title

CEBU, Philippines - The Southwestern University outlasted University of San Carlos in a thrilling five-set battle to seize the Central Visayas leg title of the Shakey’s Girls Volleyball League Season 14 yesterday at the Sacred Heart School- Ateneo de Cebu gym in Barangay Canduman, Mandaue City.

After a resounding 25-21 start, SWU relaxed in the succeeding two sets giving USC a chance to grabbed the lead, 21-25, 15-25.

But the SWU belles bounced back in the fourth set 25-23 to forge a decider in which they prevailed, 15-7.Angel Castillo who led SWU’s charge bagged the Most Valuable Player award.

It was a sweet victory for SWU who failed to win the title last year against University of San Jose-Recoletos.

SWU, thus, earned the right to represent the region in the Shakey's GVL League of Champions later this year.

Earlier, host team SHS-AdC snared the third place trophy after upending Abellana National School in straight sets, 25-19, 25-17. (FREEMAN)
