Pague bags triple titles

Caecent No-ot Magsumbol - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines - Zamboanga’s Jose Maria Pague will go home bringing a very memorable experience here in the Queen City of the South after he emerged as the lone triple champion of the 21st Jose R. Gullas Tennis Cup, which formally came to a close yesterday at the Consolacion Tennis Club in Laray, Consolacion.

The Palarong Pambansa silver medalist flexed his athletic muscles to win the boys 16, 18-under and boys 18 doubles titles.

Pague scored a huge upset victory over top-seeded Francisco Hidalgo, 7-5, 6-2 in the boys 16 finals.  He then claimed the 18-under crown by upending Norman Joseph Enriquez, 6-2, 6-3.

He also won the boys 18 doubles crown alongside Kenneth Banico of Siquijor to become the only player who bagged three trophies in this year’s edition of the biggest and longest running junior tennis event in the country outside Metro Manila.

Naga City’s Zethley Mae Alferez, on the other hand, prevented Elizabeth Abarquez from scoring a double victory after she won the girls 18 crown, 6-2, 6-4.

Abarquez was already tired when he faced Alferez after a grueling super tie break win against Patricia Velez of Davao, 3-6, 6-4, 10-8, for the 16-under title.

John David Velez grabbed the 14-under title over Nilo Ledama, 1-6, 7-5, 10-7, but settled for a runner-up trophy in the boys 12 after falling in the hands of Brent Cortes, 6-3, 0-6, 10-0.

Mitch Largo made her presence felt after dominating the unisex 10-under at the expense of CJ Suson, 4-1, 5-4, 7-5.

Suson got another runner-up trophy in the girls 12 class which was ruled by Tiffany Nocos, 6-3, 1-6, 2-10.

Elliane Bahonsua grabbed part of the limelight after winning the under 14 title over Wyne Paglinawan, 6-2, 6-0.

Kara Salimbangon and Patricia Velez took home the girls 18 doubles crown, while Cesar Kristofer Salimbangon and John David Salimbangon won the boys 14 doubles.

The tandem of Lyra Mae Repollo and Shedel Gica also topped the girls 14 doubles.  (FREEMAN)
