USPF upsets USJ-R in CESAFI football

CEBU, Philippines- University of Southern Philippines Foundation stunned the defending champion University of San Jose- Recoletos in the opening game in the college division of the 2014Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Incorporated (CESAFI) football tournament at the Cebu City Sports Center yesterday.

Henry Acaso sinks his penalty kick in 86th minute to give USPF the win. USJ-R wasn’t able to recover and lost their first game of  the single-round robin action.

USJ-R’s secondary team was not as lucky too after being outsmarted by the University of San Carlos booters, 4-2. USPF’s secondary squad suffered a 0-3 defeat in the hands of Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu.

In the other tertiary match, the University of the Visayas and the University of Cebu ended on a 1-all draw.

UC’s Mark Felicilda scored UC’s goal in the 38th minute but was UV’s Pedro Diao’s penalty kick on the 72nd minute of the game that tied the game.

Meanwhile, over at the Aznar Coliseum,  the defending tertiary men’s champion USJ-R prevented one frustrating start in volleyball after taking away a fourth set win against USC, 25-22, 25-13,24-26,2-19.

Southwestern University and Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu won their first assignments in the secondary girls’ class. SWU preyed on Cebu Eastern College, 25-6, 26-2, while SHS-AdC needed an extra set before winning against USPF,20-25, 25-20, 27-25.

In the secondary boys action, USC  posted a straight set win against USPF, 25-20,25-23. (FREEMAN)
