Cobras score first round sweep in CESAFI hoopla
CEBU, Philippines - The Southwestern University Cobras overwhelmed the University of Cebu Webmasters, 75-36, to complete a five-game first round sweep in the 14th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. men's basketball tournament last night at the Cebu Coliseum.
Cameroonians Landry Sanjo and Bendley Valdor served as the deadly 1-2 punch for the Cobras with 19 and 16 points, respectively. Only Jovanie Luz was the local player for the Cobras who scored in double figures with 10 points.
It was actually an all-Cobras show as they instantly brought the Webmasters into a basketball clinic after taking an early 19-3 lead.
Despite a very disorganized second quarter where they had a spate of turnovers, most of them passing errors and traveling violations, the Cobras were still protecting a huge lead at halftime, 31-17.
The rest of the second half didn't show any difference expect that it prolonged the agony for the Webmasters, who dropped to their fourth loss against a solitary win.
Top gunner Jan Michael Auditor just managed 12 points for the Webmasters, while Juston Dacalos chipped in 10 markers.
In the secondary matches, University of San Carlos Baby Warriors eked out a 65-64 win over the Cebu Institute of Technology-University Wildkittens, while the University of Cebu Junior Webmasters trounced the Don Bosco Technology Center Greywolves, 75-37.
Jean Jacque Antigua and Kent John Malazarte tossed in 16 and 15 points, respectively, as the Baby Wariors joined the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles on top of the leaderboard in the secondary division with identical 3-0 slates.
Joshua Philip Manatad and Jasper Berezo each scored 16 while Justin Jules Langres added 15 for the Wildkittens, who crashed to their third loss in five starts.
On the other hand, Darrel Shane Menina netted 16 points and Richestel Isla added 12 as the Junior Webmasters bettered their win-loss record to 3-2.
