Cops eye personal grudge, robbery: Ambush leaves engineer dead
CEBU, Philippines — A 57-year-old engineer died of multiple gunshot wounds in an ambush in Mandaue City yesterday morning.
Chief Insp. Michaelangelo Beltran of the Mandaue City Police Office (MCPO) identified the fatality as Roel Perales, a resident of Compostela town.
Based on investigation, Perales was driving his Nissan Navara with plate number (ABM-5670) when the suspects waylaid him when he was about to enter a warehouse in Zone Sikwa in Barangay Paknaan at around 9:30 a.m.
The gunman reportedly shot at the windshield first before opening the car door and shot Perales several times.
"Gipusil ang windshield, gi-open ang door unya gipusil balik. Gikuha ang bag ug dayong nisibat," Beltran said.
The bag reportedly contained money and a gun.
The assailant left the area with a companion on board a motorcycle.
Residents in the area told the police that the suspects rode a black motorcycle and one of the assailants wore a black jacket.
Police recovered eight empty shells of a .45 caliber pistol, as well as several brown envelopes, from the crime scene.
Beltran said robbery and personal grudge are two main angles in the investigation.
"Duna sila'y establishment (diri sa barangay) nga naay CCTV (closed-circuit television camera). Mag-request mi didto nga mangayo mig kopya," Beltran said.
Chief Insp. Mercy Villaro, information officer of MCPO, said they have reached out to neighboring towns and police stations for help in the investigation. (FREEMAN)
