Tomas may give exec functions to Junjun

Odessa O. Leyson - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña is open to the possibility of giving executive functions to his nephew, Councilor Renato “Junjun” Osmeña Jr. even if he belongs to the opposition.

“I don’t have any plans doesn’t mean I won’t… But it’s on the table, I listen to anything man gyud,” the mayor said.

He, however, said that Junjun has to prove himself first that he is capable of handling the task before getting any deputation.

“Culture of attitude, non-hostile, he just wants to do something and he just want to work for the city,” the mayor said of the qualities needed to be deputized.

He said it is important to see the good qualities of the councilor before giving it in order to make sure that the position will be given to deserving official.

“He’s not hostile so why don’t we give him a chance to do something but it’s not automatic. We’re not dealing out privileges like we’re an ATM or something like that. You know he is very charming, we only see the skin; we don’t know what’s inside,” Osmeña added.

Aside from his own standards, the mayor said he also needs to consult the other members of Bando Osmeña Pundok Kauswagan.

Councilor Sisinio Andales said he has no problem with Junjun given an executive function.

“If the mayor believes he can deliver the needed solution of some problems where he is an expert, why not? As earlier manifested publicly, he is still an Osmeña. If Junjun is willing to accept the challenge to do some executive function in order to promote public welfare,” he told The FREEMAN.

Junjun was not available for comment as he is on a personal trip abroad. He was recently appointed to the City Council as replacement of Councilor NendellHanz Abella, who was appointed commissioner of the National Labor Relations Commission. (FREEMAN)
