CEBU, Philippines — Talisay City wins first place in this year's Sugbo Daygon, an inter-LGU chorale group competition annually organized by the Cebu Provincial Government, held last night at the Capitol Grounds.

"We give them an opportunity to showcase their talents as a choral group. This is initiated by the Provincial Government Office, it's an activity nga mu-hold ta ug daygon contest to keep the Christmas tradition of Cebu," says Ramil Abing, Executive Assistant of the Provincial Governor's Office.

Talisay City was represented by the Talisay City College Chorale. Conductor Praiselou Labajo said they are grateful for the win.

"Amo sang paasalamatan ang nagduma ani, mao ang Capitol, sa pagpahigayon aning daygon contest, sa pagdevelop sa mga talents sa mga Sugboanon labi na sa daygon," Labajo said.

As winner, Talisay City gets P50,000 while second place winner Sibonga town gets P40,000 and Moalboal gets P30,000 as third place winner.

Other participating towns Oslob, Naga City, Ginatilan, Borbon, and Dalaguete get P20,000 consolation prize.

Initially, Tudela also signified their participation, but was unable to make it to competition night.

"Karon nine ra [participants], lower siya than last year that's because of their activities sad sa ilahang lungsod, naa sila'y mga contest pud ilaha didto, mga Christmas daygon. Plus, the constraint [of] the budget but nine is a good enough [number] for the competition." Abing said earlier.

Now on its third year, the competition is open to all ages, with participating choral groups ranging from elementary students and high school students to adults.

"[Well] as I have heard, our opponents are elementary students and high school students. Perhaps, we'll be able to learn from the children themselves, their discipline," says Rober Serna, participant from the group Oslob Notes.

As early as 12 noon yesterday, participants from the different municipalities started to arrive at the Capitol to practice their contest pieces.

In line with the Christmas celebration, the Provincial Capitol will also host a Festival of Lights event where the whole Capitol building will be lit to the accompaniment of symphonies of Christmas songs.

The Festival of Lights is going to be open from December 20 until December 31 and will feature different performances and entertainment.

Caroling Cops

Meanwhile, Lapu-Lapu City Police Office (LCPO) - Police Community Relations (PCR) and Female Juvenile and Gender Section (FGDS) conducted gift giving through 'caroling' in Sitio Kitchen, Barangay Pajo yesterday at 10 a.m.

Some 50 households were serenaded with original songs written and performed by police officers.

Police Superintendent Regie Palis Real, head of LCPO-PCR, said that through this, residents will know how friendly and approachable police officers can be.

"Para naman hindi sila takot lumapit sa amin, hindi sila nahihiya. Ito din yung pagkakataon na kami yung lalapit para makita nila na friendly din yung kapulisan nila," she said.

The homes serenaded by police also received gifts in the form of grocery goods such as rice, noodles and sardines.

"Meron kaming binibigay na flyers para yan sa start ng Simbang Gabi, at least para malaman nila yung hindi dapat gawin bago sila umalis kasi pagkakataon na yan ng mga masasamang tao na gumawa ng hindi maganda, so at least meron silang mga tips," she said. (FREEMAN)
