UV’s new building features modern classrooms, facilities

CEBU, Philippines — Modern facilities, unique classrooms and two floors intended for a library are among the features of the newly inaugurated eight-story building of the University of the Visayas (UV) main campus.

The edifice is named “Inday Pining Building” after the late Josefina "Pining" Gullas, the mother of both Talisay City Mayor Eduardo Gullas and The FREEMAN chairman Jose Gullas. The Gullas family owns the UV.

Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma led the structure’s blessing ceremony yesterday morning.

UV President Eduardo Gullas said that nothing is impossible when it comes to prayers.

By January next year, they would start celebrating the school’s 100th anniversary.

He said that UV is a product of solemn prayer which started from his parents.

Jose "Dodong" Gullas, UV’s Executive Vice President, said it has been his dream, wish and passion to provide quality education, enough and appropriate facilities for the students.

He recalled that he would always look back those years when his father Vicente “Inting” Gullas, established the school in 1919.

He said it was his father’s dream to put up a school even though he was a lawyer by profession, but was an educator by heart.

“UV was born out of sweat, tears and prayers. In spite that he’s poor, his intention is to put up the school,” Dodong said.

He said that the building was dedicated to his mother, saying that he has been very close to her. Two years ago, a six-story-building was also constructed at the UV-Mandaue City that was named after his father.

In the Inday Pining Building, the first two floors will be used for the different offices for student services.

The third and the fourth floors will be for the school’s library that will be named Don Vicente Gullas Reading Center.

Dodong said that he intended to allocate two floors for the library to give students leeway to study with the books provided.

The fifth floor will house the science laboratory, while the sixth floor would feature modern classrooms.

The College of Law and graduate studies will be on the seventh floor, and the eight floor is intended for the school’s amphitheater.

Dodong is hopeful that their students would be proud Visayanians, choosing to enroll in the school without regrets.

Dodong and Eduardo aim to provide quality education to the students adding that the school has been grating scholarship offers to more than 2000 students in the school. (FREEMAN)
