Jandic just living alma mater’s motto

May B. Miasco - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — For Charleanne Jandic, the 2017 medical graduate from University of the Visayas (UV)-Gullas College of Medicine who helped the lady who lost her arm in an accident at an MRT-3 station, she only lived by her alma mater’s motto "Amor, Servitium, Humanitas."

It stands for "Love, Leadership and Service to Humanity."

"It is in our motto... (We learned) more on the lectures that has been taught to us repeatedly," Jandic recounted of the learning and experiences during her medical studies at UV that helped her develop skills particularly in attending to emergencies.

The MRT-3 accident in Manila where she was among the first responders has been making rounds online where she has gained several compliments, some naming her a modern hero.

She said her medical studies at UV had equipped her to become more responsive especially to people who need care or immediate treatment.

"(We had always been told) you are a doctor, you should respond. You should know what to do," said Jandic.

She added she only did what every doctor is expected to do and never expected an accolade or praise in return.

Good thing, the knowledge she has acquired in school and the experiences from lectures to work immersion in the field of medicine were indeed applicable in real life.

"Everything you studied at school was needed in the real world or real life. That is where you acquire the learning or skills and know what to do on actual situation," said Jandic.

She was born and raised in Polomolok, South Cotabato and decided to leave her hometown to pursue her childhood dream of becoming a doctor.

She took her four-year nursing course in Iloilo City and later on moved to Cebu in 2012 to proceed for her post-graduate medical degree program.

In 2013, she opted to transfer to UV-Gullas College of Medicine and completed her four-year medical studies there. She was one of the graduates of the May 2017 batch.

At present, she is completing her one-year internship at the Chinese General Hospital in Manila - a requirement needed before she can take the licensure examination. (FREEMAN)
