American charged for estafa

Mylen P. Manto - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — An American national is facing criminal charges in court for failure to pay his hotel bills.

Christopher Muller was indicted by for estafa after the Cebu City prosecutor’s office found probable cause against him. Prosecutor Van Russel Inopiquez recommended P16,000 bail for Muller’s temporary liberty.

The complaint was filed by Cathay International Resources Corp. which operates a hotel in Barangay Apas, Cebu City. The hotel’s director for finance, Leslie Ann Tan, alleged that Muller checked-in on May 14, 2017 and was supposed to check-out on May 20, 2017.

The accused allegedly left the hotel in the morning of May 20 without checking out and paying his bills amounting to P15,043.80. The prosecutor’s office issued a subpoena to Muller in the address he provided to the hotel upon check-in but he did not answer the complaint.

The prosecutor resolved the complaint without the accused’s counter-affidavit because he did not respond to the subpoena.

“The above allegations, being undisputed, warrant a finding of probable cause to hold respondent for trial of the crime charged,” read the resolution. (FREEMAN)
