Radaza: Monitor students with suicidal tendency

Christell Fatima M. Tudtud - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Following a reported suicide of a student of Lapu-Lapu City Night High School, Mayor Paz Radaza is asking all guidance counselors to monitor their students, especially those dealing with depression as well as those who have history of suicide attempts.

Radaza issued the call after schools division Superintendent Marilyn Andales informed her about the death of one of its students last Tuesday.

"We will go back again sa mga guidance counselors nga tan-awon nila ang mga kabataan," Radaza said.

According to Police Officer 3 Reynaldo Arradaza, they received report that a Grade 10 student was found dead in his room in Barangay Looc. The 18-year-old male student was reportedly depressed after breaking up with his girlfriend.

Meanwhile, Radaza said she is also planning to reactivate the junior police in schools.

"We were discussing man gud ni Dr. Andales about Junior Police. I think i-part sad na namo ang mga advice sa ilaha," she said.

The junior police already existed before but was deactivated when its members went to college. The program aims to give the elementary and high school students a social role in the community and will watch over their classmates and schoolmates within the campus in terms of peace and order.

At least 4,000 students were listed for the seminar and most of them are student leaders within the 69 schools of the city including private schools.

"They will serve as police in their respective schools. Ato i-seminar ang mga junior police.Mohatag og schedule nako si Dr. Andales within this week for the training," Radaza said.

The training will be coordinated with the City Social Welfare and Development Office, Lapu-Lapu City Police Office, City Environment and Natural Resources Office, and the legal counsel of the Department of Education. (FREEMAN)
