Contractor starts hauling piles of trash at Inayawan

Odessa O. Leyson - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — The private hauler hired by the Cebu City government to dispose of its garbage has started collecting the old piles of garbage left uncollected at a transfer station in Barangay Inayawan.

Department of Public Services head Roberto Cabarrubias said that JomaraKonstrukct Inc. hauled at least 5,866 tons of old trash from EVO Enviro Solutions Inc.

Cabarrubias said it was part of the 11,000 tons of garbage that were not collected when the contract of Jomara expired and a new hauler, Pasajero Motors Corporation, came in last June.

Cabarrubias said Jomara won another contract for the month of September until December.

Cabarrubias said that Jomara will complete the hauling of the remaining piles of garbage as soon as possible depending on the weather condition.

"Depends upon the weather.Normally everyday. No specific schedule," he said.

Cabarrubias is hopeful that Jomara will be able to clear the remaining 5, 133 tons of old trash at EVO transfer station within one month.

Councilor Eugenio Gabuya Jr., chairman of the committee on public services in the City Council, said that hauling the old piles of garbage is part of Jomara’s contract.

Councilor Joel Garganera, a vocal critic of the present administration, said he will wait for the official report from DPS.

"I still have to get the report from DPS before I comment on it," he said.

The city government is obligated to pay JomaraP124 million to dispose of its garbage from September to December this year. (FREEMAN)
