Vidal’s health still ‘crucial’

May B. Miasco - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Cebu archbishop emeritus Ricardo Cardinal Vidal remains under observation days after he was rushed to a private hospital in Cebu City because of fever and difficulty in breathing.

Msgr. Joseph Tan, media liaison officer of the Archdiocese of Cebu, said the cardinal is suffering from recurring pneumonia but is now in stable condition.

"I think the pneumonia may cause complications, but right now he is holding up against all that," Tan told The FREEMAN yesterday.

Vidal has been hospitalized thrice already this year due to the same illness. Tan said the doctors attributed his condition to his old age.Vidal, 86, is considered as the most senior cardinal in the country.

He was first brought to the hospital early this year and was diagnosed of pneumonia. He was again hospitalized in Manila last August for the same reason.

On Wednesday last week, he was rushed to Perpetual Succour Hospital in Cebu City also because of the same health problem. Tan said the cardinal’s condition is being monitored closely in the intensive care unit.

"Everyday is crucial but again he has very good genes," said Tan.

His doctors recommended to continue his bed rest and to complete his prescribed medications. Tan is also calling for prayers for the fast recovery of the cardinal. (FREEMAN)
